On The Dotted Line 3
God is a covenant making and a covenant keeping God. The covenant is affirmed and sealed as we pray in the name of God. God revealed himself to Moses as YHWH. This is His covenant name.
Jesus taught us to pray: Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. As New Covenant people we access all the promises of God when we pray in the name of Jesus.
Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV)
[9] Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,[10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
He is LORD. That is the name that has signed the covenant.
This week we want to continue to look into the full meaning of this name. The full meaning of the name was defined by the experiences that God's people had with their LORD. When we look at the YHWY name it is more than a quick definition but we can draw upon the full revelation of God as He showed up in the every day lives of His people.
Last week we covered 4 names, and I almost gave some a heart attack fearing a long sermon. Well this week I have 6 names to cover, but it should go quicker. All you that have great faith say AMEN!
Jehovah-Heleyon = (Psalm 97:9, ASV; 7:17; 47:2; 83:18); reveals God as the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity (Isaiah 57:15).
Psalm 97:1–12 (NIV84)
1 The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice.
2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side.
4 His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory.
7 All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols— worship him, all you gods!
8 Zion hears and rejoices and the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments, O Lord.
9 For you, O Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.
10 Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.
Jehovah-Hoseenu = (Psalm 95:6); The Lord our maker. Refers to God’s ability to fashion something out of what already exists (Hebrews 11:10; Ephesians 2:22 ), not to His ability to speak and create out of nothing.
Psalm 95:6–7 (NIV84)
6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.
Today, if you hear his voice,
Jehovah-Tsidkenu (tsid-kay’-noo) = (Jeremiah 23:5, 6; 33:16); the Lord is righteous; the LORD our righteousness; the LORD my righteousness; root = Tsidkenu = straight; right; righteous; just; justify. This word represents God s dealing with men under the ideas of righteousness, justification, and acquittal.
Jeremiah 23:5–6 (NIV84)
5 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land.
6 In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.
This is the name by which he will be called:
The Lord Our Righteousness.
Leaders disappoint. Leaders should be good shepherds but too often they turn out to be in it for their own interests or they simply are not strong enough to be able to fulfill our expectations (See Jeremiah 21).
The LORD will rise up the One who will bring justice. The LORD will make things right. The LORD will work righteousness in us and through us.
Jehovah-Shalom (Shal-lom) = (Judges 6:24); the LORD is peace; the LORD my peace; the LORD our peace; the LORD is or sends peace; (root = Shalom = peace; welfare; good health; whole; favor; perfect; full; prosperity; rest; make good; pay or perform in the sense of fulfilling or completing an obligation.)
Judges 6:1–32 (NIV84)
Gideon
6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites. 2 Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds. 3 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country. 4 They camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. 5 They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count the men and their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it. 6 Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help.
7 When the Israelites cried to the Lord because of Midian, 8 he sent them a prophet, who said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 9 I snatched you from the power of Egypt and from the hand of all your oppressors. I drove them from before you and gave you their land. 10 I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.’ But you have not listened to me.”
11 The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”
13 “But sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian.”
14 The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”
15 “But Lord,” Gideon asked, “how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”
16 The Lord answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together.”
17 Gideon replied, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me. 18 Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you.”
And the Lord said, “I will wait until you return.”
19 Gideon went in, prepared a young goat, and from an ephah of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak.
20 The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so. 21 With the tip of the staff that was in his hand, the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. 22 When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Ah, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”
23 But the Lord said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.”
24 So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
25 That same night the Lord said to him, “Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. 26 Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering.”
27 So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the men of the town, he did it at night rather than in the daytime.
28 In the morning when the men of the town got up, there was Baal’s altar, demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar!
29 They asked each other, “Who did this?”
When they carefully investigated, they were told, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”
30 The men of the town demanded of Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he has broken down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”
31 But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, “Are you going to plead Baal’s cause? Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar.” 32 So that day they called Gideon “Jerub-Baal,” saying, “Let Baal contend with him,” because he broke down Baal’s altar.
Oppressed by the Midianites the people cry out for a deliverer and God raises up Gideon. God is my peace. He is the one who by his strength defeats my enemies and rebukes the devourer.
The key lesson in the account of Gideon is that Gideon had to learn the voice of the LORD. It was only after learning the voice of the LORD that he would be able to trust the LORD to bring ultimate peace. We will never find ultimate peace if we rely on our own strength or ability to rally the troops.
Jehovah-M’Kaddesh = (M-kad-desh) = (Leviticus 20:8); the LORD is sanctification; the LORD who sanctifies; the LORD does sanctify (sanctify = to set apart); root = M’Kaddesh = sanctify; holy; hallow; consecrate; dedicate; sanctuary; Holy One.The term “holiness” from the Hebrew “kodesh” is allied to sanctify, which is translated by words such as dedicate, consecrate, hallow, and holy in the Scriptures. GOD wants us to know Him as Jehovah-M’Kaddesh, Jehovah who sets us apart unto Himself. In connection with man, Jehovah M’Kaddesh (Jehovah who sanctifies), empowers us with His presence to set us apart for His service.
Leviticus 20:8 (NIV84)
8 Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the Lord, who makes you holy.
The LORD is the one who sets us apart. He Sanctifies us, that is he sets us aside for His unique purpose.
Jehovah-Rohi (Ro -ee) = (Psalm 23:1); the LORD is a Shepherd; the LORD my Shepherd; (root = Rohi = shepherd; feed; to lead to pasture; tend a flock.)
Psalm 23:title–6 (NIV84)
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
THE LORD is my Shepherd. Look at the one who cares for every aspect of your life. provision, protection, presence and purpose are all found in the care of THE LORD.
