Titles Are Important
Titles matter. I have heard people say, in fact I have even said, the title isn’t important just let me do the work. It is as if the title isn’t important at all. The truth is that titles are important. If you are having troubles on a phone call to customer service somewhere what do you do? “May I speak to your manager?” Titles matter if your title is The President of the United States.

When someone is signing ‘on the dotted line’ their title is important. This week we will close on the financing of the next phase of the building project here. When I close I will take a document that has several signatures. Those signatures carry importance because of their title. They are directors.

Jesus Christ, titles and names of
These, in their rich variety, throw light on either the person of Jesus Christ or on some aspect of his ministry.

        The Son of Man
Jesus often referred to himself as the Son of Man. There is dual meaning here. First I believe Jesus said He was the Son of Man to bring emphasis to the uniqueness of His mission. He was God in the Flesh. Secondly from the time of Daniel through the intertestamental time the coming Messiah was often referred to as the Son of Man. In essence Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah.

        Daniel 7:13–14 (NIV84)
13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

        Luke 19:10 (NIV84)
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
        Matthew 11:19 (NIV84)
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.” ’ But wisdom is proved right by her actions.”

        Luke 5:24 (NIV84)
24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins….” He said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

        John 3:13 (NIV84)
13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.

        John 6:53 (NIV84)
53 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

        Acts 7:56 (NIV84)
56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

        Revelation 1:13 (NIV84)
13 and among the lampstands was someone “like a son of man,” dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.
The “I am” sayings of John’s Gospel
I think it is very important to know who Jesus thought He was. John recorded several “I Am” statements of Jesus. These too have a dual meaning. There is an allusion to the “I Am’ that Moses encountered at the burning bush. There the covenantal name was given YHWH. We have covered 10 of the covenantal names.
Secondly Jesus was simply declaring who He is.

        John 8:58 (NIV84)
58 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

        John 6:35 (NIV84)
35 Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

        John 8:12 (NIV84)
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

        John 9:5 (NIV84)
5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

        John 10:7–10 (NIV84)
7 Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

        John 10:11–14 (NIV84)
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14 I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—

        John 11:25 (NIV84)
        25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

        John 14:6 (NIV84)
6 Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

        John 15:1–5 (NIV84)
I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

All these titles and characteristics find their meaning in the name that was given.

        Matthew 1:21 (NIV84)
21 ... and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Jesus had indeed come to save his people—the very meaning of his name in Hebrew, Yeshua, a shortened form of “Joshua” (Heb.: יְהוֹשֻׁעַ, Yĕhôšua˓), is “Yahweh is salvation.”
It is not a big step phonetically from Yehosua to Yeshua. Jesus formal name contains the covenantal name YHWH.
Also according to the rabbinic view that the Messiah was named before the creation of the world (b. Pesaḥ. 54a; Str-B 1:64).
There always has been something special about that name.
Why would religious opponents warn the disciples not to preach “in that name”?
        Acts 4:18 (NIV84)
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
Why do people never curse using the name Mohamed or Budah?
There is something special about that name!
Salvation is in no other name.
        Acts 4:12 (NIV84)
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

Pray In The Name of Jesus
        Miracles Accompany That Name
        Mark 16:17–18 (NIV84)
17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

        Matthew 18:19–20 (NIV84)
19 “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”

Believe In Then Name of Jesus

12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
